Il flyer come opera della notte

Before it was an announcement, the flyer was the first artistic gesture of a night. Under this generic title, the archive also gathers posters and other printed pieces from the same nights. Carl De Moncharline was always its art director: the concept, the theme, the world, the tone, then the creation entrusted to talented graphic designers whose hand he chose.

From this collaboration came printed objects that eventually outlived their function. Some are now held in the collections of the Design Museum Brussels and MAD, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, housed in the Rohan-Marsan wing of the Palais du Louvre, with an inventory number and a museum record. They were notably shown in the international Night Fever exhibition (https://designmuseum.brussels/night-fever/), devoted to design and scenography in the history of the night. A promotional video produced in 2018 for this exhibition, available in the Films section, gives pride of place to the iconic flyers created under the impetus of Carl de Moncharline for the Mirano Continental, Fuse and Who's Who's Land. Curated by Jochen Eisenbrand (Vitra Design Museum), with Catharine Rossi and Katarina Serulus as co-curators and Konstantin Grcic as scenographer, the exhibition illustrates the museum recognition of these night-time venues as cultural and visual laboratories, and bears witness to the essential role of their art directors in the evolution of contemporary design.
