A 1976 article describes the "Artistic Safari" devised by Mon De Rijck, with the help of the Tervuren Museum, to enliven the Château Malou gallery in Woluwe: a black curtain, a terracotta colonial helmet, a mock jungle, lianas, animal silhouettes and chirping sounds. Visitors are invited to "hunt" for the paintings, drawings and prints they would like to take home. The article lists the artists (César Bailleux, Bestgen, Brenta, Camille De Taeye, Cyrus Dubray, Grosemans, Alain Lambillotte, Mari, Luc Mondry, J.M. Navez, Christian Rolet, Vincent Strebelle, Olivier Leloup, Lionel Vinche and others) and recalls the artwork rental principle: 250 F registration fee and 100 F monthly rent per work.

At Château Malou
"ARTISTIC SAFARI"
How to get in? You have to lift a black curtain, put on a colonial helmet... made of terracotta, and sink into the gloom of a mock jungle. There is a jumble of lianas and branches, vaults of green plants, animal silhouettes cut out against backdrops of light, as well as a sound environment made of chirping... Such is the pleasant mini-scenography devised by Mon De Rijck (with the help of the Tervuren Museum) to enliven the Château Malou gallery in Woluwe.
- We called this event the "Artistic Safari", he says, because visitors are invited to hunt for the paintings, drawings and prints they would like to take home.
Beyond the set, indeed, hundreds of works of all kinds are gathered, signed by an impressive number of artists. Impossible, obviously, to detail all the submissions. There is quite a lot of dross, amateur work, but also executions that show greater professionalism. This is the case, notably, with César Bailleux, Bestgen, Brenta, Camille De Taeye, Cyrus Dubray, Grosemans, Alain Lambillotte, Mari, Luc Mondry, J.M. Navez, Christian Rolet, Vincent Strebelle, Olivier Leloup and Lionel Vinche, and then, in a second group, M. Aerts, P. Antoine, P. Celie, C. Declève, C. Defoin, Delcol, H. Dupond, E. Hoorne, R. Poot, H. Van Eepoel, Thomas Van Gindertael, and Zimmerman.
- For a long time, says Mon De Rijck, people have rented books. Since 1972, they have rented records. Since 1972, at Château Malou, it has been possible to rent paintings and prints.
The exhibitors have lent their works to the gallery, which in turn rents them to private individuals. For a 250 F registration fee and a monthly "rent" of 100 F per work, borrowers can leave with a parcel under their arm. "Possession" period: one month minimum, three months at most.
(Until 6 January.)
