Our Capital Everything runs on wheels Did you know that the inventor of the roller skate was a Belgian? In 1760, the eccentric Walloon inventor Joseph Merlin presented his invention in London. The Belgium Rollers are still grateful to him. Merlin presented his invention to the public by playing the violin while skating. That went wrong, as Merlin crashed into a glass display case. Photo: (© Belgium Rollers) Meanwhile, roller skates were perfected (they are now called in-line skates) and during the Belgium Rollers 'Summer Tour 2005', 20-kilometer tours are now completed every Friday in the city. Wearing a helmet and protection for wrists, elbows, and knees is mandatory for children. Participation is free and material can be rented one hour before the start.
