Our Capital Everything runs smoothly Did you know that the inventor of the roller skate was a Belgian? In 1760, the eccentric Walloon inventor Joseph Merlin presented his invention in London. The Belgium Rollers are still grateful to him for it. Merlin presented his invention to the public by playing the violin while skating. That went wrong, as Merlin crashed into a glass display case. Meanwhile, roller skates (now called in-line skates) have been perfected and during the Belgium Rollers 'Summer Tour 2005' every Friday, 20-kilometer trips are made through the city. Wearing a helmet and protection for wrists, elbows and knees is mandatory for children. Participation is free and material can be rented one hour before the start.
