Bicycles are in fashion, mountain bikes too. Bicycle police officers undoubtedly have the disadvantage of moving slower than their motorized colleagues.
However, they have the double advantage of being able to go where cars cannot and of being directly accessible to citizens speaking to them.
The police stations of Hôtel de Ville, Grivegnée, and Angleur have each received two mountain bikes. A procurement contract is also underway to equip the police stations of Avroy, Saint-Léonard, and Guillemins with mountain bikes.
Other police stations are set to follow in 2004. Bicycle patrol officers are exclusively inspectors directed by their superior based on the neighborhood's security priorities.
The use of mountain bikes also allows for targeted interventions, such as monitoring events like the Belgian Roller Days.
