Smooth Rolling!

■ On Saturday, Mons welcomed around a hundred participants for its 1st ride of the Belgium Rollers Summer Tour MONS ▼ While some were lounging on the terraces of the Grand-Place, others had put on their heavy-duty gear to take part in Mons' first ride of the Belgium Rollers Summer Tour. Helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads were mandatory. About a hundred participants gathered for the grand departure at 9 p.m. “I stopped roller-skating three years ago because of my knees,” explains Cindy, 20. “Back then, I didn't wear protective gear. I think these summer rides will be an opportunity to get back into the sport. Fortunately, my partner is here to look after our little girl.” At 32, Olivia is much less confident. As a total beginner, she does not hesitate to grab onto passers-by she encounters, and especially her guide! “This is my second Roller Parade,” she exclaims. “More than a challenge, it's a pleasure!” Fortunately for her, the 20 km route initially planned was scaled down so as not to finish the ride too late. The skaters returned to the Grand-Place around 11 p.m. after covering about fifteen kilometers. They passed through Hyon and the Allée des Oiseaux before reaching the Grand Large. Sponsors provided refreshments. The City and the organizers had partnered with the Red Cross and the TEC to supervise the participants. Indeed, a bus followed the route to pick up the most exhausted skaters. Repeated falls resulted in no injuries. The protective gear was there to absorb the impacts! On bicycles or roller skates, police officers ensured safety along the route. Some participants preferred to follow the movement on mountain bikes rather than on wheels: “I'm athletic,” says Jean-Pierre, 55, “but at my age, a mountain bike is still easier. That doesn't stop me from enjoying the fun of the evening.” In Mons, the roller ride will take place every Saturday evening. Registration is free.
