Friday, July 4th will be "Roller Day" in Woluwe Park, an event bringing a grand finale to the Roller Tour 2003 which spanned across the capital. Behind this initiative is the non-profit organization Ganzaroller, dedicated to making rollerblading accessible to everyone while focusing primarily on safety. "Some people start rollerblading as a trend, without even knowing how to brake!" confides Oscar Karekezi, founder of the association. "Side mirrors have been found ripped off by skaters who were probably panicking..." He emphasizes: "There is a legal void, no legal status for the skater who has only duties and no rights. We are fighting for this to change; our efforts are beginning to pay off." July 4th will offer a new opportunity to introduce children and adults to rollerblading; adults, growing in number, "indeed seem to have gotten past their initial embarrassment and today account for 80% of skaters," notes Oscar. As an official partner of the Roller Parade, Ganzaroller will rely on IDJ's experience for this special day and offer initiation, advanced training, and awareness sessions on rollerblading to the public starting at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m., following an acrobatic rollerblading demonstration, novice and experienced skaters can take part in a musical family ride along the park's paths. Equipment and protective gear will be provided free of charge on site. And for those wishing to improve further, note that besides year-round lessons (€6 per hour, equipment included) and holiday camps during school breaks, Ganzaroller offers braking courses every Sunday in July and August from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Carrefour des Attelages in the Bois de la Cambre.
