DJ Sake

DJ Sake (born in Antwerp in 1970) is a pioneering figure of Belgian hip-hop and R&B. He started scratching at age 12, and it was in 1984, after watching the film Beat Street, that he became passionate about the art of cutting and scratching. From 1987 he was hired at the legendary Antwerp club Funk You by Tony McKenzie (Bigga), where he quickly became a one-man show. In 1991 he won the title of DMC Champion Belgium. He also founded Fresh Beats Productions alongside Ya Kid K (future voice of Technotronic / Pump Up The Jam). While house music was taking over European clubs, Sake remained faithful to hip-hop and R&B. He settled at the Café Local in Antwerp in a small room called Heaven, which by word of mouth attracted clubbers from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France. In 1997 he caught the attention of René Boonstra, owner of the Mondial in the Netherlands, one of the first European superclubs to host urban music nights. Five months later, he teamed up with his long-time rival — DJ Cosmic — to form The Supreme Team in October 1997. Together they quickly became the most in-demand DJ duo in Europe, playing the after-parties of the biggest stars: Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Usher, Missy Elliott, J-Lo, Destiny's Child, and even a memorable night with Prince. In 2005 DJ Sake returned as a solo act, adopted digital DJing and continued to reign over clubs. He notably runs the « Hot Sunday Nights » nights at the Mondial and holds a weekly residency at the La Rocca club in Lier (concept « Forever Funky »), while developing the new generation of DJs in Europe. DJ Sake appears as support for the Usher concert at Who's Who's Land on 5 February 1998, under the banner « The Suppreme Team ».
