Intergalactic Beatz Part One — Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra LIVE

Presentation text: « Carl Craig, born in Detroit in 1969, says he was greatly influenced by Derrick May while looking to develop his own style; in 1990 he spent six months in England and worked for a time with Derrick as a partner in Rhythm is Rhythm, while doing programming with him for Mark Moore's (S'Express) album « Intercourse ». Through Mark he met Sarah Gregory and started working on tracks. The first was « Crackdown » on Fragile Records, the second « Wrap Me in Your Arms » on Retroactive. Back in Detroit, having found a new direction, Carl decided to go it alone. He dissolved Retroactive and founded Planet E Communications. The first Planet E release dates from 1989: « 4 Jazz Funk Classics ». Carl wanted Planet E to be diverse, which he proved with Paperclip People « Throw », the compilation « Intergalactic Beatz » and « Bug in the Bassbin » released under his Innerzone Orchestra alias. That track, released in '92 and picked up a few years later by the jungle scene through Roni Size and Goldie, is a searing jazz break symphony that helped spark interest in the use of jazz breaks in techno. Today, Innerzone Orchestra in concert is a fusion of congas, timbales, double bass and Carl Craig's electronics. After its first performance at the Sonar festival in Barcelona, Innerzone Orchestra will play its first official Belgian show in the brandnew first floor theater room of the Who's Who's Land club in Brussels. »

This night, entitled « Intergalactic Beatz Part One », presented the live concert of Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra at Who's Who's Land in Brussels. It was the project's first official performance in Belgium. The club had just opened a new first-floor theatre room (« brandnew first floor theater room »), and this event was its cultural inauguration.

Carl Craig, born in Detroit in 1969, is a major figure of the second wave of Detroit techno. After founding the Planet E Communications label in 1991, he developed several aliases including Innerzone Orchestra, a project fusing jazz, techno and live improvisation. The flyer mentions his influence from Derrick May and his work on tracks such as « Bug in the Bassbin » (1992), which became a precursor reference of drum'n'bass.

The support DJ's were Joost de Lijser, a Belgian pioneer of the acid, house and techno scene since 1987; Deg (Christophe De Groote), a Brussels DJ and producer who had just joined the Fuse residents in 1997; and Stephanie, very probably D'Stephanie, already considered one of Belgium's most in-demand DJs at age 18.
